“I think we can stop here for tonight,” Daniel says to me, transforming from an old woman back to his usual form. I watch him take off his dress which I always find funny then I turn around while he changes.

It has been two months with us moving as far away from Cassius as possible. I think about him all the time. I can’t help it. A part of me still loves him. I think, in a weird way, I always will.

But I know the love he has for me isn’t pure.

Each place we stop at, I put a protection bind over. Each day I use my magic, the stronger I feel. I don’t get tired or weak. I have even put magic in the trees so we will be informed if anything evil is within a mile of us.

Polly is gutting the fish she got from the river, even though I tell her I can bring us food. She says it’s good to do things naturally also. To keep myself busy, I like to clean. I wash our sheets, plates, and I dust. It keeps my mind off things.

I’m making the beds, humming to myself, when there is a knock on the door. We all stop what we’re doing, looking towards one another. I start to panic.

Has he found us?

Maybe my magic isn’t as strong as I thought it was. I take a step to the door when Daniel halts me. He tells us to hide under the bed, which we do, and he answers it to see a girl with messy red hair. She is soaked from head to foot by the heavy rain outside. She’s shivering, her clothes sticking to her.

“I’m so sorry to bother you but I was hoping I could stay here until the rain passes.” Her lips quiver; she’s trying not to cry. That instinct to help her kicks in. I get up from my hiding place, grabbing a towel, and place it around her, bringing her towards the fire.

I pass her a cup of water and she holds it for dear life, bringing it close to her body. “Why are you out here in the middle of nowhere?” I grab another towel and start drying up her hair.

A tear falls down her cheek. “I kind of ran away from home. My father was drinking again, and he isn’t very nice when he’s been drinking.” She looks down at the ground.

I notice a mark under her sleeve. “You’re more than welcome to stay here for however how long you need,” I reassure her.

“Thank you so much for your warmth and kindness. I was afraid you would turn me away. No one really likes strangers.”

“I wouldn’t turn away a person in need. You’re safe here. There is some dry clothing in the chest over there. Just help yourself to food and water.” I stand up but she quickly takes hold of my hand, thanking me.

I walk over to Daniel, who is looking at me with irritation.
